Rotary District 9690
Our Governor Marilyn Mercer
with her husband Dudley
District Governor 2010-11
Marilyn was born in Sydney and now lives in Windsor. She is married to Dudley and together they have five children. Tony, Scott, Mark and Karen, are married and have provided eleven grandchildren. Marilyn and Dudley's youngest child, Bindi, has participated in a Siemens Science School, RYPEN, RYLA and Rotary Youth Exchange to Denmark in 1997-8.
Marilyn holds a Bachelor of Education Degree, Diploma in Teaching and is a Justice of the Peace. During her teaching career, she has held the positions of Acting Deputy Principal, Head Teacher Administration, Head Teacher Welfare, Science Consultant, and member of the Schools Review Panel. She has worked with the NSW Board of Studies in writing and reviewing Science Syllabuses and was the NSW representative for the team which wrote the National Standards for Science Teachers. Her teaching at the Australian International Space School resulted in Marilyn being selected as the first Australian Teacher to work with N.A.S.A's "Future Flight" at the University of Hawaii.
Her work in Science education has been recognised with the Australian Academy of Science Teachers Award, the Ben Lexcen Teachers Award and the NSW Science Teachers Award. After 38 years of teaching in High Schools around NSW, the final 12 years, were spent at Bede Polding College, South Windsor, from which she retired in 2002, as Head of Science.
She is very active in her local community as a LinCs (Living in Communities) Volunteer, Red Cross "Hands On" Volunteer, Hawkesbury Cancer Council Relay for Life Committee Member, member of the CBOA (Community Board of Advice) for Hawkesbury District Health Service, Hawkesbury Historical Society Committee Member and Volunteer Guide for Hawkesbury Regional Museum.
In April, 2003 Marilyn joined the Rotary Club of Hawkesbury. Her association with Rotary began earlier due to her work with Dudley on the 9690 Rotary Youth Exchange Committee. Dudley is a Rotarian, Paul Harris Fellow, Past President of the Rotary Club of Windsor, a Past 9690 Assistant Governor, Secretary for YEP, and currently the 9690 Community Service Chairperson and that of the STEP Committee. He worked with a FAIM team in Aitape PNG following a devastating tsunami.
As the RC of Hawkesbury was the smallest in the District, Marilyn was "thrown in at the deep end", has held all positions in her club (except Secretary and Treasurer) and was invited to become President 2005-6.
At District level, she and Dudley have been Hosts for YEP, PACE and GSE inbounds. Marilyn has been a member of the 9690 Family of Rotary Committee since its inception.
Marilyn was Assistant Governor (Zone 4) in 2007-8 and is currently Chairperson of the 9690 Family of Rotary Committee and President of the Rotary Club of Hawkesbury. She is a Centurion and a Paul Harris Fellow.
