District Governor Elect 2011-12

Involvement with the community through service clubs has been a part of all David’s adult life. David was a scout; gaining his B P Award in Rovers and moving on to become a leader in Cubs and Rovers. He was a RYLArian in 1972, being sponsored by the Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga to attend RYLA in Orange along with Carolyn who was active as a leader in Guides. This was the first time a married couple had been sponsored by the district. David joined Apex at the age of 22 and was an active member of seven clubs as his employment took him to various towns around New South Wales. At the compulsory retirement age of 40 David received life membership of the Apex Club of Weston Creek ACT.

In 1994 he joined the Rotary Club of Canberra South and after another job relocation joined the Rotary Club of Lower Blue Mountains in 1995. He was President in 1999-2000 and has held most board positions including several years as treasurer. He has served D9690 on the membership committee, MUNA, as an assistant governor and District Insurance Officer. He is part of the newly formed Club Visioning Team of Strategic Trainers. In 2008 he led the D9690 GSE team to D7870 in New Hampshire and Vermont and is GSE committee chair for 2009/10.

His community service led to his selection, through his employer, AMP as an Olympic Torchbearer in July 2000 when he proudly carried the torch through the Barossa Valley in the lead up to the Sydney Olympic Games.

David was born and educated in Sydney and joined AMP as an insurance officer after completing his Leaving Certificate. He then spent 26 years with GIO leaving as CTP Manager (Green Slips) after the company merged with Suncorp. David retired in 2007, having spent the final four years of his working life with the University of Western Sydney in their student administration division.

He has been married to Carolyn, a retired primary school principal for 40 years having met her when both were in the scouting movement. Their son Richard, an engineer and his partner Nina live in Sydney and their daughter Virginia, a science teacher and husband Craig, along with their three sons live in Canberra. Both children were Rotary Exchange students and David and Carolyn have hosted another eight students from around the world.

Both David and Carolyn have been recognised as Paul Harris Fellows and have been Rotary Foundation Centurions since the program’s inception. When not involved with local Rotary activities they like to travel and have attended five Rotary International Conventions and visited over 25 overseas clubs.

Any other spare time is spent playing golf, walking, cycling, completing all the chores on the retirement list and playing Pa to Max, Joey and Oscar.
